Trish’s Dish for ’27 Dresses’

Trish's DishBefore we get started with the movie part we need to set the table so to speak!  Tonight we are pairing up our 27 Dresses with a great Triple Chocolate Torte and Merlot.  Yes I know…… a dessert with a red wine but the movie we are watching demands something different, sweet and strong all together.  Trust me, this will be amazing!

Triple Chocolate TorteYou will need:  One (or two depending on how many guests you are having) bottle of Inniskillin 2002 Montague Estate Merlot $24.95 and a great recipe for Triple Chocolate Torte.

The Merlot and the Chocolate Torte are a great pairing.  The richness of the chocolate brings out the velvety character that Merlot has.  The 2002 vintage was one of the warmest summers on record in Niagara and produced red wines with huge fruity character and soft tannins.  It is because of this that we can pair such a strong flavoured wine with our chocolate torte.  When we pair food and wine we always want to keep the weight of our items equal.  Chocolate torte is very rich and intense and so is Merlot!  Our movie is also intense though at first it doesn’t look that way.  We meet Jane (played by Katherine Heigl) our leading lady who has been a bridesmaid 27 times.  We watch as Jane meets Kevin a wedding writer who soon discovers that this is not a regular Maid of Honour.  Kevin finds Jane’s hidden dresses, all 27 of them and while Jane is trying them on and explaining why her friends have picked such wacky dresses for her to wear we soon discover that Jane has a heart of gold.

27 DressesWe also watch as Jane’s sister Tess steals the man of Jane’s dreams away from her yet we still love Tess because Jane still does.  In the end Jane prevails and gets the ultimate Maid of Honour revenge!  There are some great heartfelt revelations during the movie about who we choose to love and why sometimes we shy away from commitment.  These lessons are softer than in other romantic comedies and I think they come across more sincere for it.  The characters are well developed and there is a good balance between the leads and the supports, you feel like you know them all equally by the end of the movie.

So….why pair a chocolate torte, Merlot and 27 Dresses?  On the surface they all appear to be something that we indulge in, sort of secretly (it seems that we are all on diets these days and chick flicks are well you know….chick flicks that we give in to) but when you look more closely at them they are much more intense.  Our movie has a much richer underside that matches with our Merlot and Chocolate Torte.  We all like to indulge once in a while and this was a great indulgence for me!
