Sci-Fi Adventure “Rebel Moon” to be Zack Snyder’s Next Project

A while back we heard from Zack Snyder that he wanted to do an Akira Kurosawa style Star Wars film. Obviously that never materialized,  but it looks like he will retool the script for Netflix and it will be called Rebel Moon.

Snyder is working on the script with Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, who co-wrote the 300 screenplay.

The film will be produced by Stone Quarry which he and wife, Deborah Snyder, co-own, along with Weslney Coller. Eric Newman who has worked with Zack before will be producing under his banner, Grand Electric, known for Children of Men, Project Power and Bright.

The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.

“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

Zack Snyder did pitch the idea to George Lucas, but it fell apart when the Star Wars IP was sold to Walt Disney. He felt it had great potential and started reworking it at the same time as Army of the Dead with Johnstad and adding Army’s co-writer Hatten (John Wick).

“I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”

This is a huge year for the writer, cinematographer and director. With his restored Justice League crushing the streaming market and overseas physical media sales, and Army of the Dead having been viewed by over 72-million people in its first four weeks and now this announcement.

Zack Snyder has found a new home and it is Netflix. I hope this is IP that can be built on and we get many sequels.
