Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Theatrical Review

Zack Snyder’s bold vision of Superman and Batman is unlike any previous superhero movie we’ve seen. It’s dark and somber emboldened by a Hitchcockian vibe and Greek fable story telling. That is what I loved about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s not afraid to let the themes of the real world blend with darker side of having superheroes in our world.

We are finally seeing Snyder’s arc for Superman coming to fruition. In Man of Steel we see the moment he establishes the “no kill” rule – after taking Zod’s life. Superman is still struggling with who he in is BvS that is until he makes a major realization. Snyder has been giving “birth” to the man of steel of the last 2 films and I think we’ll see the Superman we expect in Justice League.

Likewise, Snyder’s version of Batman is the darkest and most merciless Batman we’ve seen on film. Without spoiling Batman isn’t the hero we know or expect. Bruce Wayne has lost all hope and essentially becomes a little less reserved in his take down of the baddies. This makes his arc a little more surprising to those expecting him not to take lives.

Lex Luther is much different than what we’ve seen before. An genius who’s playing a role in order manipulate everyone and sets him on a path to destroy both Superman and Batman. Like Superman, Lex’s character will undoubtedly grow into the sinister evil mastermind we know and love.

I do feel that Lois Lane was a throw away character in this movie until the climax. It felt as though she was merely there to move the plot along. The plot may look thin BvS had many elements happening visually and thematically throughout the film to push along the narrative. BvS is not a movie that spoon feeds the story like other superhero films. It is a movie that makes you think and may require subsequent viewings to piece it all together.

The forced Justice League elements woven throughout the film messed with the pacing a little, but made me all giddy for the upcoming film. Wonder Woman makes her debut in Dawn of Justice and her screen time is minimal. However, she stole every moment she is on screen. I cannot wait for the WW movie next year.

Henry Cavill, via some brilliant acting, is able to show the internal struggle Superman is combating. Ben Affleck on the other hand is BATMAN. I was shocked by the casting decision, but withheld judgement until seeing him on screen and it was worth the wait. From the moment the first image of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman hit the internet I was sold. She owned the role and has made me an even bigger fan. Jesse Eisenberg has basically played the same character in several films and it was nice to see him break free and do something a little more “crazy” with Lex. I’m still torn as to whether I enjoyed his portrayal or not, but who knows where the future will take him.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice certainly set the stage for Justice League. It also completed the Superman story arc and showed us how bad ass Batman can truly be. BvS also introduced us to Wonder Woman and showed how she can throw down like no man. This is one I can’t wait to have on Blu-ray (or 4K).
