Get Smart - Theatrical Review

Ever since I saw the clips for Get Smart at Wonder-Con in February I’ve had really high hopes for this movie. I’ve never seen an episode of Get Smart, but after seeing this movie I think I’ll have to check it out when Warner Bros. releases the first season on DVD. To put it simply, I loved this movie. It was a laugh out loud hilarious thrill ride.

I really enjoyed the fact that Maxwell Smart (Steve Carrell) isn’t as dysfunctional as he could’ve been. He could pull of some very James Bond-esque stunts that were equally weighted by his physical humor. Agent 99 played by Anne Hathaway was the perfect counterpart for Carell’s style of humor; she almost provided the voice of the audience. I would see Agent 99’s reaction and feel a connection to her.The story was pretty cut and dry, providing a minor twist at the end. I could see it coming a mile away but this is not a thrill movie. This film makes fun of every spy/action flick that has come out, not to the degree of Austin Powers but close enough that I was familiar with the humor. I’m told the story is quite similar to the original Get Smart story, which is good, why fix something that’s not broken? The character development was absolutely great. By the end of the movie I felt very close to the characters and when something bad happened I shared in their pain. As cheesy as that sounds it’s true. That’s what every movie should attain to and Get Smart has done it! Smart isn’t without his “wa-wa” moments, like when a joke totally flop, but overall the story and humor is absolutely superb.

Simply put, in the box office battle between Get Smart and Love Guru, Get Smart has it hands down. Carell’s more intelligent humor will win this weekend. So what are you waiting for? Stop reading this review and go see Get Smart, do it, do it now!
