Hancock - Theatrical Review

I saw a preview some six months ago set high expectations for me for the upcoming Will Smith Starer Hancock. What could be better then an alcoholic superhero who can’t control his powers? How in the world could they screw this one up? Well, for starters, they tried to make Hancock a family friendly movie! I’m not kidding. It had a Disney style predictable plot line. Ok, maybe I’m being harsh, but my spirit was really crushed by this movie.

The story left much to be desired. Save for the occasional twist you could predict the whole movie from beginning to end with relative ease or at least within 20-minutes of the twist. This movie would’ve been so much more awesome if Hancock started off as an asshole superhero, and ended as an asshole superhero. I’d by that comic! Who doesn’t love a good anti-hero once in a blue moon?

Will Smith does do some stellar acting, which we’ve come to expect that from him and any less would be almost unacceptable. I enjoyed Jason Bateman’s character Ray Embrey since he was the type of person that we can all relate to. Charlize Theron looked her usual beautiful self as Mary Embrey, but turns in a subpar performance. She seemed to stumble in her delivery a couple times which took me right out of the story line. There were few spectacular performances in Hancock, which unfortunately, didn’t aide the ho-hum story line at all.

The CGI and special effects were especially annoying. There’s a car chase scene in which Hancock skewers an SUV on to the spear of a building. This whole scene looks like it was done with CGI. When my friend made a comment afterward the sequence I was reassured that I wasn’t over analyzing it. In this day and age we have come to expect so much from CGI that if it even borders on unrealistic it’s immediately noticeable and takes you right out of the movie.

That brings me to Hancock’s super powers. The movie did very little to set them up, and it seemed as though there was just a force of nature pushing him skyward. I understand that it’s a superhero movie and not realistic, but there’s still a point when it just becomes ridiculous. That point was reached when Hancock just leapt into the air. There NEVER was any explanation of how this worked exactly.

So what we have here, is a subpar storyline, an adequate acting performance, and special effects that a five year old could see through. I guess the reason I’m so disappointed is that I love Will Smith and his movies. I love Wild Wild West (I admit it), and there’s a special place in my heart for MIB. So when I saw the trailer my expectations were really high, and after seeing the movie they were smashed with a sledge hammer. Don’t bother seeing this in the theater, wait for it to run on TNT or rent the DVD.

Spread the love
