The Hunger Games - Theatrical Review

I will admit upfront that I did not even hear of The Hunger Games novel until the first images from the movie hit the web. I tend to live in a world of film and not book. It’s not something that was really encouraged, or something that was pushed upon me as a child. I’m working on changing that of course. That’s not why we’re here though. We’re here to talk about The Hunger Games.

I tend not to believe the hyperbole when it comes to movies. Yet, I somehow I got sucked into hype for this movie, and thankfully, I was not disappointed after seeing. I was in fact so impressed with the film that I took my wife to the second viewing.

There are some definite ‘wow’ moments in this film from some of the visuals to the acting. I can’t spoil the one visual wow instance that truly stands out for me, however, I can tell you that it occurs during the tribute parade.

As for the performances Jennifer Lawrence carries this film easily on her shoulders. The moment when she’s about to enter the game zone truly shows her acting chops. You could actually feel what she was feeling at that moment.

Stanley Tucci is awesome. ‘Nuff said, and Woody Harrelson also plays a fun character who is obviously tormented by having won ‘The Hunger Games’. When it comes to the District 12 escort Elizabeth Banks, well, she was annoyingly brilliant. If I could have reached into the film to slap her I think I would have, which means she did her job well. Josh Hutcherson is his typical self. That being, a decent actor.

Needless to say, I believe this is a must see film and I will, undoubtedly be waiting for the inevitable Blu-ray release so I can see it again. In the meantime, I think I may read the book now.

Happy Hunger Games. May the odds be ever in your favor!
