The Lion King: Diamond Edition - Blu-ray Review

Movie Review

I don’t think much new can be said about The Lion King. A film that after seeing in theatres helped me get kicked out of the local McDonald’s for singing the Lion Sleeps Tonight with my friends… rather loudly.

This is quite possibly my favourite hand drawn animated film of all time. The music, the story, and the emotional connection still remains strong within me. I’ve been grateful and blessed that I can now share this movie on Blu-ray with my three littles. My youngest being the most involved.

I even took my wife to see the stage show. It was awesome. If you haven’t seen it then go, if you have not seen this movie… then you must. I know of only one person who does not like this movie.

I have no more to say.

Video

Two words – Wooooo oooooooooooooooW! This is beautiful. I’ve never seen The Lion King look so good. It’s stunning in 1080p. The vibrancy of the color palette is breathtaking. There are zero issue with the print, and I do mean zero. Darks are shockingly rich and defined.

Audio

What? Sorry, can’t hear you. This DTS-HD Master 7.1 is tearing at the fabric of my home theatre system. I cannot think of a single animated film like this that has taken such advantage of my setup. From the incredible score to low rumble of Mufasta’s voice to the stampeding sound of the wildebeest.

Be ready to have your mind blown away.

Extras

There are lots of extras here. First you have the very cool second screen feature which gives you a tonne of extras during the film. Then you have a great audio commentary with co-directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff along with producer Don Hahn. It’s wonderfully entertaining.

It’s nice to see Disney take the time to create a brand new, currently filmed, featurette. Running nearly 40-minutes the Pride of the Lion King. It features pretty much everyone involved in creating the film and the creator of the stage show. It somehow adds more to my enjoyment of the movie.

Present Don Hahn looks back at past Don Hahn over the development, creation and the release of film in 1994. There are also five Deleted & Alternate Scenes that were brilliantly cut from the film.

If you don’t own any of the previous DVD releases you can get your hands on the extras from them on this Blu-ray. However, they’re not actually on the disc. Disney has them in their “Virtual Vault”. Over a 100-minutes of extras are available for your bandwidth consumption.

The best thing removed from The Lion King movie gets it’s own feature and that was the addition of The Morning Report on the Platinum DVD release.

Sometimes animated Bloopers & Outtakes work. While these aren’t as funny as some these are pretty decent.

Scroll through hundreds of images in the Interactive Blu-ray Gallery. It’s broken into four categories to narrow down you browsing choices. If you like to sing along, which not flip on the Sing-Along Mode? Ya, you know you’re going to.

Plus don’t forget, you can catch a bunch of Sneak Peeks.

Conclusion & Final Thoughts

I’m so happy to finally have The Lion King in glorious 1080p. It’s a welcome addition to my collection, as I’m sure it will be for yours. With stunning audio and video and bevvy or new and old extra features it’s well worth the purchase.

I recommend you pick this up, or get it now and stick under the tree as this will be one sought after title come Christmas.

Spread the love
