Pixar’s “Turning Red” to Go Back to Theatrical

In March of 2022 Pixar’s first movie since Onward will debut in theatres again hopefully kick off a return to traditional releases for the animation company. Turning Red will restart the Pixar theatrical experience with Pixar’s Lightyear following in the summer.

Since the Pandemic has changed everything over the past 18-months movie studios have had to figure out a way to get their movies out while still generating revenue. As Onward was released at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic it had a less than stellar run in theatres as everything started closing.

Pixar’s Turning Red is directed by Domee Shi, who helmed the Oscar-winning short Bao, and follows a 13-year-old girl who turned into a red panda whenever she gets excited. As a father of girls this concept intrigues me. It is currently slated for a March 11, 2022 release.

Disney, who owns Pixar, turned to their streaming platform Disney+ where they released some films as premium content where Pixar movies Soul and Luca are being given to subscribers for free. Pixar staff were upset that their movies were not only skipping the traditional theatrical release, but were on Disney+ for free when other movies had an extra fee.

I believe this was smart marketing for Disney, even though on the surface it appears to suck, as a free Pixar movie will drive subscribers to the streaming service and the other premium content likely would not have, but what do I know – not much about what’s happening in those decision meetings.

Pixar had a killer streak going with their animated masterpieces. Starting with 1994’s Toy Story they have had success after after success with only The Good Dinosaur not being a smashing success.

Luca is playing in one theatre in California starting tomorrow, which is when you can also catch the Italian set film on Disney+.
