‘Star Trek’ Sequel Warps to 2011

The latest Star Trek movie hasn’t even hit theatres yet, but bosses at Paramount aren’t waiting to get things rolling on a sequel.

Star Trek

JJ Abrams and his production studio Bad Robot are on board to produce. However, there is no word as to whether Abrams will step behind the camera to direct the sequel. The studio has already hired Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to pen the screenplay. The story is still in its embyonic stage, but the trio plan to have the script ready by Christmas.

Lindelof is quoted as saying: “There’s obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn’t even come out yet, but we’re so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed.”

As far as the storyline goes Kurtzman stated they will take their cue from fan reaction. Lindelof added “Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month. With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We’ll be ambitious about what we’ll do.”

I for one am excited about the May 8th release of the new film and a sequel announcement this early in the game can only mean good things for the flatlining franchise.
