Kevin Smith is back with another comedy to add to his ever growing arsenal of movies. This time it stars two new people to the Kevin Smith universe upcoming star Seth Rogen as Zack and the ever beautiful Elizabeth Banks as Miri. Zack and Miri have been best friends since the first grade, and they’ve been living together for years. Up until now it’s never been romantic, but as money becomes tight they decide to, you guessed it, make a prono. That sets the story up, but can Smith and crew pull it off? Read on to find out!
I’ll start by saying this is certainly not a date movie, unless you know your date really well. Zack And Miri features quite a bit of tasteless nudity, and grotesque jokes. This movie is going to offend some group of people, somewhere, somehow. But that’s the beauty behind Smith’s filmmaking; he doesn’t care who he offends, as long as he sticks to what he believes.
The story was the big surprise. It seems really straight forward, but it grows into something really original and special. Every time I thought the plot line was going one way it would flip around and go a totally different direction. Props to Smith for really putting this movie together, he continually amazes me. My only complaint would be that it’s a bit too over the top. It could’ve used just a hair of toning down, but I don’t see Smith toning anything down, ever!
Seth Rogan did a great job as Zack, but he really needs to shed his stoner persona or he risks being typecast. On the other hand, I could stare at Elizabeth Banks all night long! On top of all that Banks has some acting chops, what a package! Of course this film wouldn’t be a Smith production if it didn’t include his usual gaggle of friends, but I’m not letting those characters out of the bag!
All in all Zack and Miri is a must see movie, there’s very little to dis-like. It’s definitely not for the family, but it’s a ton of fun regardless. So, keep the kids at home, make sure your wife is in a good mood, and go have a blast!
