Columbia Tristar has sent us a plethora of new announcements to help you make it through the weekend.
First up is the is the stirring and sexy tale WORLD TRAVELER, starring Billy Crudup and Julianne Moore, and directed by Bart Freundlich, maker of THE MYTH OF FINGERPRINTS (and Moore’s real-life hubby, lucky bugger!). This wildly ribald road movie will be presented in Digitally mastered Dolby 5.1 sound and Anamorphic Widescreen. Look for deleted scenes, cast and crew commentary and trailers as extras. This R rated gem will hit shelves January 21.
Also on January 21, Columbia Tristar has the official Spanish entry for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award, MAD LOVE. This historical suspense deals with the turbulent politics of the marriage between Princess Joan of Spain and Archduke Phillip in the 1490’s. Look for this one to also feature Anamorphic Widescreen and 5.1 Surround en espanol, and English subtitles. Theatrical trailers are the sole extras, but they are not likely to be missed on a majestic film like this?
Details are also now in on Columbia’s release of the 1975 classic SHAMPOO, also skedded for January 21. Warren Beatty plays an upwardly mobile male hairdresser who just can’t seem to stay away from his lovely customers, which can only get him in trouble… Set on the eve of the 1968 Presidential election, the film is a scathingly witty statement on the social mores and political views of the time, and is a masterpiece of 70’s filmmaking from the team of screenwriter Robert Towne (CHINATOWN) and director Hal Ashby (HAROLD AND MAUDE) who previously collaborated on the classic Jack Nicholson film THE LAST DETAIL. This one is coming to you in gloriously remastered Anamorphic Widescreen with a huge range of subtitle options and trailers for extras. Believe me the film by itself is more than worth the price. This one is at the top of my personal list.
Also on January 21, Columbia releases a pair of long-awaited Humphrey Bogart classics on DVD for the first time. In his final film role, Bogey stars as an out-of-work and down on his luck sports writer, using a crooked boxing promoter (played with precision by the great Rod Steiger), to wrangle his way back to the top. THE HARDER THEY FALL will be presented in remastered Anamorphic Widescreen with original mono sound, lots of subtitle options and a photo montage as an extra.
SIROCCO is one of Bogey’s most masterful roles, as he portrays a tough and ruthless gunrunner and casino owner, who has to rely on his arch-nemesis to help him escape a war-ravaged Syria. Lee J. Cobb plays the French Colonel that Bogey turns to, and Marta Toren plays the lethal dame. In the original 1.33:1 fullscreen ratio, remastered with Dolby surround sound, vintage advertising and photo montages, this one has been on many fans MIA lists for a long, long time.
Landing a little bit earlier, on January 14, Columbia Tristar has the Frank Sinatra – Spencer Tracy classic THE DEVIL AT 4 O’CLOCK. Tracy stars as a washed-up alcoholic priest awaiting his replacement on the island of Talua in the South Pacific, when a trio of hardened criminals, led by Sinatra, land on the island. When a volcanic eruption threatens to destroy an isolated hospital full of children, Tracy convinces Ol’ Blue Eyes to join him on a perilous rescue mission to guide the kids through a series of disasters and get out by 4 O’Clock, when the mountain will blow. Another cool classic from Columbia, who is steadily gaining my vote as the kick-ass studio for classic films. This one will also feature remastered Audio and a new Anamorphic Widescreen transfer, but few extras. Keep em’ comin’ Columbia!!
