DVD NEWS

How about a little DVD NEWS???It’s been simmering now for a while, but the sauce is getting right slippy, the tasty juices have commingled, and it’s about time to get that Goulash on, baby!!!STAR WARS DVD gossip…AMERICAN WEDDING deets…SEABISCUIT, LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN…Hugh Jackman singing in chaps…James Coburn and Harrison Ford team-up… Sable gets medieval on our collective ass…And the BAD MOVIE POLICE are busting heads on a DVD rack near you… Word around the DVD campfires is that Lucasfilm, bolstered by the successful packaging of next months THE ADVENTURES OF INDIANA JONES: THE COMPLETE DVD MOVIE COLLECTION, have set the wheels in motion for STAR WARS to come to DVD.They apparently wish to emulate the INDY set closely, so expect a 4-disc set, with a disc each for STAR WARS, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI, packaged with a fourth disc containing extras. Look for news to leak out slowly towards the end of 2004, as it did this year for INDY, and have lead-in material for the final film, which will land in theatres in spring 2005.A little closer to home is the first “official” announcement for 2004. Universal Home Video has set a January 2, 2004 release date for the final installment in the AMERICAN PIE series. As with the previous films, look for R-rated and Unrated versions in both Anamorphic Widescreen and Fullscreen. The unrated versions will go by the lengthy moniker of AMERICAN WEDDING UNRATED: EXTENDED PARTY EDITION. Also look for a “Gift set” that will include a bonus disc of extras entitled AMERICAN PIE REVEALED. Full extras specs will follow when we get em’.December 16 will see the release of this summers sleeper hit, SEABISCUIT, from Warner Home Video. Look for separate Fullscreen and Anamorphic Widescreen versions, featuring 5.1 DDS sound, commentary from Director Gary Ross and omnipresent auteur Steven Soderbergh, a collection of Jeff Bridges photos from the set, still galleries, trailers and three featurettes – THE MAKING OF SEABISCUIT, ANATOMY OF A MOVIE MOMENT and RACING THROUGH HISTORY. Warners will also releas the film as part of a Gift Box with the Widescreen version of the film, the additional DVD, THE STORY OF SEABISCUIT: THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, a making-of book, bookmark, card set and film senitype. On the flip side, the summers biggest box office stinker, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN will arrive the same day, December 16, from Fox Home Entertainment.Again, separate Fullscreen and Anamorphic Widescreen versions will be available, both with 5.1 DDS and 2.0 Surround audio. Extras will include 2 audio commentaries, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes and trailers. Image Entertainment has the DVD release of the 1999 TV version of OKLAHOMA! on the schedule for November 18. Notable for the performance of leading man Hugh Jackman, this set will come in Anamorphic Widescreen with 5.1 DDS and a second disc of extras including an hour long Making-of documentary. Ki-yipee-yo-kiyay! YAH!Our pals at MTI have a November 4 release that all you wrasslin’ fans may be interested in. Rena Mero (aka SABLE of the WWE) stars in the sword and sorcery flick SLAVES OF THE REALM, a medieval yarn about a harem of beautiful Princesses held hostage from a young King who needs to find his prospective Queen. Mero plays the High Priestess who must find a way to get yon hot wenches back to the castle. Formerly titled CHAINED SINNERS: MEDIEVAL FLESHPOTS (no, I’m not kidding!), this sounds like the kind of good ol’ exploitation joustabout that we’ve been missing for a long time…Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment has announced a long-lost classic coming to DVD on September 30. The comedy-caper flick DEAD HEAT ON A MERRY-GO-ROUND features legendary tough guy James Coburn, a twisty and hilarious plot, and the feature film debut of a young dude by the name of Harrison Ford. Presented in Anamorphic Widescreen with remastered audio, extras are limited to trailers, but with a classic like this, who gives a rats ass? You’re gonna buy it anyways… because I told you to, that’s why!…Also coming up on September 30 is THE CHRISTOPHER LEE COLLECTION from one of my new favorite little studios, Blue Underground. The films included are THE BLOOD OF FU MANCHU, THE CASTLE OF FU MANCHU, CIRCUS OF FEAR and THE BLOODY JUDGE, all of which will be available separately or in the numbered box set, which is limited to 7500 units. So be sure to keep an EYE out for it on the 30th, and for more info, visit… BLUE UNDERGROUND.COM.And last, but never least, from our homies over at Tempe DVD…“For anyone who’s ever watched a movie so bad you wished acting required a permit or that a 14-day waiting period was mandatory to buy a camera…the Bad Movie Police are here! Follow the adventures of Sgt. Elke Mantooth, Lt. Drucilla Dread and The BMP Task Force as they seek out the worst “cine-terrorists” in movie history and bring their crimes to justice for your entertainment!BAD MOVIE POLICE #1 – The first BAD MOVIE POLICE case is a little gem from 1992 called GALAXY OF THE DINOSAURS. Its claim to fame is director Lance Randas’ gross misuse of stock footage from PLANET OF THE DINOSAURS, intercut with thrift store footage shot in the woods behind the director’s father’s house!• Commentary with producer J.R. Bookwalter and star James Black• Behind-the-scenes featurette (17 mins.)• “Into The Black” segment (7 mins.)• Jessica Mills, Reporting (1 min.)• Still gallery & original trailer• Full-color insert with Sgt. Elke Mantooth bioBAD MOVIE POLICE #2 – Shot in late 1991, CHICKBOXER has a long list of crimes it’s committed against good cinema. Among them is a cameo by retired scream queen Michelle Bauer (HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS) shot in Los Angeles while the rest of this turkey was lensed in the backwoods of Ohio under the dubious talents of feminist director Yolonda Squatpump. Watch for Bauer’s steamy scene in the flick’s finale which was obviously tacked on to an otherwise skinless cheesefest! OUT OF SIGHT and SOLDIER star James Black is also on board for this comedic misstep in cinematic sludge!• Commentary with producer J.R. Bookwalter• Behind-the-scenes featurette (7 mins.)• “Into The Black” segment (6 mins.)• Still gallery & original trailer• About the Bad Movie Police• Full-color insert with Lt. Drucilla Dread bio”
