SPIDERMAN posted the highest single-day box-office gross in history on Saturday, May 4 with $43.5 Million. It also broke the record for hitting the $100 million mark in only three days, and with more than $31, 500 per screen it has claimed the title for biggest per-screen average in history for a wide-release feature. SPIDERMAN 2 will hit theatres May 7, 2004. Sam Raimi will be back in the directors chair, and Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will both reprise their roles. Filming begins early 2003. Claire Danes has been tapped to replace 19 year old newcomer Sophia Bush in TERMINATOR 3. Director Jonathan Mostow told Daily Variety that Bush was replaced only because \"her appearance and manner play younger than what we wanted for the role.\" Quentin Tarantino will be executive producer on a project based on the Marvel Comic MORT: THE DEAD TEENAGER. Mort is a teen who is decapitated in a train wreck and befriends Teen Death when he arrives in the afterlife. The two new pals then embark on weird adventures. IKO Productions has optioned the film rights to SEA MONKEYS. Head Jim Miller is shopping the idea of a CG SEA MONKEYS feature to the major studios. Bruce Willis\’ Cheyenne Enterprises and MGM have signed a deal for first-look rights to projects from Marvel Comics founder Stan Lee\’s new company POW! Entertainment. Three superhero tales are already in the running, THE FEMIZONS, THE DOUBLE MAN, and NIGHTBIRD. Cowboy Pictures and Janus Films will release a new print with new subtitles, of Akira Kurosawa\’s legendary THE SEVEN SAMURAI. The film will be rereleased nationally in the fall. Clive Owen, Charlotte Rampling, Malcolm McDowell, and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers will star in I\’LL SLEEP WHEN I\’M DEAD. Mike Hodges will direct the story of a former gang boss who is drawn back into the game to avenge his brothers death. Jim Isaac will direct SKINWALKERS for Gold Circle Films. The story concerns two warring factions of werewolves. One group fight their natural tendencies, while the other embraces their nature. Roland Emmerich will direct THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW from a script he co-wrote with Jeffrey Nachmanoff. Universal, Fox and Paramount are in a high stakes bidding war over the project. It\’s an action adventure about an abrupt climate change, brought on by global warming, that threatens the future of mankind. Tony Scott is in negotiations to direct AMERICAN CAESAR for Red Wagon Entertainment. It is a modern day Caesar and Brutus story set in the U.S. Army. Frank Oz is in talks to direct POWERS, based on the Image Comics book about a detective who solves superpower related crimes. This story has him leading an investigation into a serial killer who is systematically offing members of a high profile super-team. Gore Verbinski is in final negotiations to take the helm of PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN for Disney Studios. Tim Burton will direct BIG FISH for Columbia Pictures. Based on the book by Daniel Wallace, it follows the story of William Bloom who returns to his childhood home to find that his father is dying of cancer. Desperate to get to know his father before he dies, William must sort fact from fiction in deciphering his famously exaggerating fathers life. Joel and Ethan Coen are in talks to write and direct a remake of the Alec Guinness/Peter Sellers classic THE LADYKILLERS for producers Barry Sonnenfeld and Tom Jacobsen. The story follows a gang of thieves who rent rooms from an unwitting southern lady, who foils them at every turn. They then hatch plans to kill the seemingly indestructible woman. Penelope Cruz and Jeff Bridges are in negotiations to join Bob Dylan, Jessica Lange and Luke Wilson in MASKED & ANONYMOUS. Halle Berry will star in a remake of the 1974 Blaxploitation classic FOXY BROWN for MGM studios. Rita Moreno, Marcia Gay Harden, Daryl Hannah, Maggie Gyllenhall and Vanessa Martinez have joined Mary Steenburgen and Lili Taylor in CASA DE LOS BABYS for writer/director John Cassevettes. Naomi Watts has been signed to star opposite Heath Ledger in NED KELLY for director Gregor Jordan. The retelling of the Australian folk legend will also star Geoffrey Rush, Rachel Griffiths, Orlando Bloom, Joel Edgerton and Peter Phelps. Kirsten Dunst will star with Ralph Fiennes in GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING for director Peter Webber. Shooting begins in August. Natasha Richardson will join Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes in THE CHAMBERMAID for Revolution Studios. Wayne Wang will direct. Kate Winslet is in talks to star alongside Johnny Depp in NEVERLAND for director Marc Forster. Based on Allan Knee\’s play THE MAN WHO WAS PETER PAN, the film will follow how J.M.Barries relationship with a single mother and her four sons led to the creation of Peter Pan. Production on the Miramax film begins in London in June. Robert DeNiro will produce and quite possibly star in a remake of Japanese crime drama KAOSU. The film is being developed as a vehicle for Benicio Del Toro. The story follows a young drifter who kidnaps the wife of a businessman. Chaos ensues when he returns from making the ransom demands to find her dead.
