New kid distributor Plexifilm will make their presence known with their two introductory titles on November 12. First up is the 1972 indie cult film CIAO! MANHATTAN, the tragic story of a New York trendsetter who climbs to glory and then spirals into addiction and death. The story is an only slightly fictional biopic of Andy Warhol protégé Edie Sedgewick, who also plays the role of Susan in the film. Sedgewick is rumored to be the woman who inspired such cultural touchstones as Bob Dylan’s “Just Like A Woman”. The film will be presented in an Anamorphic Widescreen transfer with 30 minutes of “lost” outtake footage and interviews with George Plimpton, costume designer Betsy Johnson and actor Wesley Hayes, as well as director commentary and a still gallery.
The other selection from the fledgling studio is the 8mm Skateboarding docu FRUIT OF THE VINE.
VINE is a collection of segments shot throughout 1999 while Rick Charnoski and Coan Nichols journeyed from So Cal to Seattle and out around the east coast in search of abandoned swimming pools to ride. A fun-filled exploration of the nature of skateboarding in general, the film includes interviews with Skate world luminaries like Steve Alba, Lance Mountain, Tony Alva, and Steve Baily. This one comes in a 1.33:1 ratio with extras including bonus interviews with Alva, Alba and Pat Quirk and 20 minutes of raw skate footage.
Kulture Home Video is about to unleash the beast with four new Judy Garland specials in separate and boxed release on November 19.
Titles include:
JUDY GARLAND, ROBERT GOULET AND PHIL SILVERS SPECIAL – An 80 minute concert appearance with song, dance and comedy routines.
JUDY GARLAND: THE CONCERT YEARS – Featuring clips from some of Garland’s best-loved concert performances as well as interviews with family and friends.
JUDY, FRANK, AND DEAN – The only appearance of the titular triumvirate in concert.
JUDY GARLAND: LIVE AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM WITH LIZA MINNELLI – The first public performance of the mother and daughter team.
Available individually or as a 4-disc box set, each special will be presented in the in the original Fullscreen black and white, with no added features.
On the other end of the performer spectrum… Eagle Rock Entertainment has the DVD release of USHER: EVOLUTION 8701 – LIVE IN CONCERT, also on November 19.
While details are surprisingly hard to come by, a Widescreen transfer and some form of surround sound will be integrated as well as extras including a photo gallery and footage of Usher performing “U Don’t Have To Call” in a completely empty stadium.
As people are already psyched up here at the EYE about this one, I thought I had better make an official announcement on what details I could find for Rhino Home Entertainment’s long awaited box set of fan-favorite MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE 3000 episodes. The films included in the set are BLOODLUST, CATALINA CAPER, CREEPING TERROR and THE SKYDIVERS. Like all of the MST3K releases, you will be able to watch with or without the sarcastic commentary of the MST team. Theatrical trailers for each film will also be included. The films will be presented in 1.33:1 Fullscreen, but details on the audio are still sketchy.
Recent Box Office stinker TRAPPED will be released by Columbia Tristar on December 24.
The decidedly UN-Christmasy story follows a group of child-nappers as they attempt to extort money and ‘favors’ from a young couple by abducting their ill daughter. 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen and 5.1 DDS stereo will be joined by extras including 2 audio commentaries, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, production notes, filmographies and a trailer.
Much ado is being made about Big Bill Shatner’s recently announced intentions to finally bring his vision of STAR TREK V – THE FINAL FRONTIER to DVD. The next film in the production pipeline for the STAR TREK films undergoing “Special Edition” treatment, FRONTIER was pummeled by critics and fans when it debuted in theatres, and is roundly considered the worst of the series. Rumors have long circulated about the problems Shatner had with the studio while working on the film, which was his directorial debut. Now, in the wake of the successful STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE and WRATH OF KHAN sets, Shatner is looking for a chance to retool the film for it’s DVD rerelease. Stay tuned for the deets.
I recently posted an item about the seminal slasher classic BLACK CHRISTMAS, finally coming to DVD in a respectable version on December 3 from Canadian distributor Critical Mass. I also taunted those of you South-of-the-Border for not being able to order it domestically. Well, good news for you, my American friends! U.S. distributor Eclectic DVD has picked up the disc for a day and date release. So December 3, pick up your stocking stuffer early and have a good time with the original slasher masterpiece.
As anyone remotely tuned in to the DVD world knows, the BACK TO THE FUTURE TRILOGY is coming to DVD on December 17. Well, Universal Studios Home Video has finally finished their newfangled website for the release check it out at WWW.BTTFMOVIE.COM.
