Movie review
One of the great things about being a giant movie fan is when you re-watch a movie when it comes out on physical media and you pick up things that you may not have noticed on the first watch, or they may be pointed out to you. Such a thing was the amazing intro to the film when my nephew pointed out to me… “This is just like a game cutscene”. How the heck did I miss that?
Like my original viewing I, once again, enjoyed watching, what I hope is the first, Mortal Kombat. While I enjoyed the first MK movie, the FX acting and story, IMO, are better. The video game relationship is more at the forefront. Sure, we didn’t get the actual tournament, but this was the setup for those matches. WB should greenlight a sequel and continue this series.

Video
WB nearly had a flawless victory with the HDR10 video on this 4K release. The colours are vivid when they need to be. The darks are near perfect and details clean, crisp and sharp.
The film starts in feudal Japan with the luscious green forests and you feel as though you are there. Once the baddies show up the red blood is a great contrast. Fast forward to the present times, and it takes on a darker grittier tone with greys and blues which loses no details. The desert and Raiden’s temple scenes are more earthy.
Audio
My subwoofer bonked out right before reviewing which is why this is late (probably due to GvK). Thankfully, my sub is back and it did get a decent workout, but not quite as good as I was hoping (not due the fault).
The best use of the Atmos is when Sub-Zero rains ice down onto an expecting Cole and fam. That’s not to say it’s not used, but that is the stand-out moment. There is really nothing to complain about. Dialog is clear, even with the masks.

- From Game To Screen: The Making Of Mortal Kombat runs about 22m and the cast and crew discuss playing the video games and how the movie made its way to the big screen and this new movie.
- Mortal Kombat: Fan Favorite Characters There are 11 segments that run for about 17-minutes. The cast and crew talk briefly about the characters and fighting.
- Fight Choreography Simon McQuoid and stunt masters discuss the fight sequences with some behind-the-scenes for about 9-minutes.
- Deleted ScenesThere are only 4 deleted scenes. Nothing that would have added to the film and only 4-minutes? I guess that’s good.
- Into The Crypt: Easter Eggs Of Mortal Kombat There are some Easter eggs hidden in the film and McQuoid will tell you what he hid and where in the film they are for 4-minutes.
- Anatomy Of A Scene with 7-segments running for 12-minutes they break down the big scenes and how fun it was to fight each other on set.
Conclusion and Final Thoughts
I may be in the minority, or may not be, I don’t know, but Mortal Kombat is a fun film. I’ve watched it a few times now and on 4K… WOW. It looks and sounds nice. There are just enough extras to wet the whistle. Worth the buy. For me, yes. You? I’m on the fence.
