Rachet and Clank: A Crack in Time [ PS3 Review ]

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Developer: Insomniac Games
Release Date: October 27, 2009
Rating: M E10+

Your favorite Lombax and robot companion are back for the attack.  This humorous sequel to the successful franchise continues to deliver a hilarious cast of characters, witty quips and one-liners, an immersive storyline and a wide array of upgradeable weapons.  The dialogue and interactions between the characters really makes this one a treat to play.

The look and feel of the game hasn’t changed; why fix something if it isn’t broken?  This latest installment introduces players to the Great Clock which, when used improperly, will allow beings to travel through space and time itself.  Dr. Nefarious is intent on controlling this asset to right the wrongs of the past.  He wants to go back and change the outcome of past pivotal battles in order to have the bad guys win.  This is where Ratchet, Clank, Captain Quark (NPC) and General Azimuth (NPC) come in to foil his evil plan.

As you begin the game as Clank, you are introduced to the Great Clock, its inner workings and how you fit into the grand scheme of things.  Sigmund (The Great Clock Junior Caretaker) guides you through this wondrous facility and gives you a brief series of tutorials.  New players will find them invaluable and seasoned players will appreciate the refresher.  A new series of puzzles involving time recording allows you to trigger the various switches and lifts using past copies of yourself in order to escape.  Some of the puzzles can be a little tricky towards the end, but the rewards are well worth it.

The gameplay with Ratchet has a much quicker pace.  As you progress throughout the game, you will discover a wide array of upgradeable weapons.  The upgrades are pretty straight forward; kill baddies in order to gain exp for both yourself and the equipped weapon.  Four of the weapons can be customized using Constructomods.  This adds a fun element to the game as you can tailor them to better suit your playing style or your environment.  Past players will be pleased to know that the RYNO (Rip You a New One) is back.  This is the best weapon in the game and can only be assembled once all of the blueprints have been located and returned to the smuggler.

Early on in the story you will come discover the Battle Arena.  This is a great place to upgrade your weapons and your skills and earn cool bonuses like Golden Bolts, Zoni, Weapon Mods and of course trophies.

Another fun feature of the game is the space travel.  They’ve opened up vast expanse of space beyond the starship battles.  You can explore space and find odd jobs to earn additional bolts and earn trophies.  As you collect Zoni (the cutest energy beings ever), you earn ship upgrades to your primary and secondary weapons as well as armor bonuses.

If you’ve enjoyed the Ratchet and Clank franchise in the past, this newest installment will not disappoint.  If you enjoy a game with a great story, extremely witty dialogue, loads of guns and gadgets and puzzle solving, then this game is for you
