Director Drew Mylrea and writer Josh Janowicz certainly do not redefine the wheel with Last Survivors but brings forth a film that truly asks some deep dark questions, poses a moral dilemma, and delivers a revelation that will leave the audiences in disbelief. Partnered up with some great performances from its cast, Last Survivors delivers on all fronts providing to be a truly captivating film that will leave you thinking about it and real life inspirations from said movie.
The film focuses on Troy played by Stephen Moyer and his son Jake played by Drew Van Acker, who are living in a remote part of a forest escaping the every day terrors in the aftermath of what has been described as World War III. Troy is teaching Jake how to survive, how to make ends meet, and hunting to make sure that he can survive on his own. They’ve been living there since Jake was a child, and the horrors of the outside world killed his mother, and they kill anyone who is identified as an outsider and trespasses on their property. One day, while looking for medicine he sees Henrietta played by Alicia Silverstone, and realizes that everything his dad has told him may not be all as it seems and things start to unravel.
What makes Last Survivors work so well, despite it having a story similar to another movie, is that it takes some real-life terrors, while throwing in elements of other movie plot lines and creates its own identity. By weaving these stories together and creating this atmosphere that then gets turned on its head in the climax and becomes something truly more sinister all together. As well as the performances from all three stars ranging from Alicia Silverstone, Stephen Moyer and Drew Van Acker, everyone delivers their all and creates a world of tension and disbelief that truly leaves the audience at the edge of their seat. Last Survivors will leave you feeling uneasy, tense, and all around a little worrisome. Last Survivors is a must see as once the revelation is revealed, the mysteries are revealed.
