Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Review

Sonic…two thumbs up

Sonic is back! The Blue Blur returns to Green Hills in this sequel to the 2020 film, “Sonic The Hedgehog”. This go at the film ads a 2 to the title and ads two new characters with the introduction of Tails and Knuckles. For this familiar with the old Sega Genesis games, Tails fills in as Sonic’s sidekick.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic is eager to prove his ability to be a real hero. He is put to the test as Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) makes a miraculous return in partnership with knuckles. The pairs journey through an action-adventure packed with comedy and family friend fun as they hunt for the powerful and mystical emerald. The stakes are high as the emerald gives the holder epic power big enough to destroy the world.

The plot is pretty straight forward and the story move along at a great pace keeping all ages amused. Personally, I found the one liners, puns, and humour to keep me smiling throughout the film. The film was packed full of pop culture references that kept me wondering what other jokes they had up their sleeves. Jim Carrey’s portrayal of Dr. Robotnik had extra flair and gave me flashbacks to his early career (a la Ace Ventura). That combined with the fact that the movie was packed full of obscure easter eggs and sonic references gave me major nostalgia delight.

The live action cast also did an amazing job at giving a light hearted, warm, and funny delivery as they dealt with Sonic and everyone elses mischief. A few heartfelt sentimental moments popped up as characters revealed their emotions… prompting an audible audience “aww”, aww… how sweet. As more of the live action characters pop up in the second half, no character felt wasted as they all provided quality laughs during their screen time… this moving didn’t waste opportunities.

As far as family friendly comedies go, I was thoroughly satisfied. It an excellent movie for the whole family to enjoy with plenty of humour that appeals to the kiddos and the parents in the audience. It was a good implementation of a video game legend like Sonic and I’d argue this sequel is way better than the first go in the series. I’m looking forward to rewatching it with my niece and introduce her to the lovable blue hero I grew up with. Quality flick, recommend it!

When rating the movie, I try to consider and rate them in comparison to their genre and then balanced with movies as a whole… although some may find it pretty straight forward plot wise, I think the quality witty writing as a comedy earns it a watch.
