The Found Footage Phenomenon – Fantastic Fest Review

Phenomenon, defined as a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose cause or explanation is in question. The Found Footage Phenomenon is exactly that the genre begs the question of what is happening, how is it happening, why is it happening? Whether the movie is a lower budget success like Blair Witch Project or something on the higher end budget like Cloverfield, the Found Footage Phenomenon explores the earliest found footage, the exposure of found footage, and the impact these features have on the cinematic medium as a whole.

Writers and directors Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott discuss everything within the Found Footage genre that brings to light some tidbits of information that I was not aware of prior to this wonderful documentary and am not sure if it was common knowledge. Without giving away what one of fun tidbits was, it was regarding Cannibal Holocaust, and no it was not related to the fact that Ruggero Deodato was in legal trouble as they thought he’d killed his cast. There is so many interesting facts and fun information throughout the documentary, such as who was truly the first creator of found footage, modern issues with found footage and how to make sure you stay true to yourself and stand out from the crowd since everyone now has a camera in their hands.

With providing insight into some of the more well known found footage features, and bringing to light that it is a harder experience since sometimes projects sit on the shelf and then the innovative idea gets called as borrowing from someone else’s feature even though it was created for their feature first. It’s a fight to the finish, and with the market being oversaturated since the resurgence of found footage, everyone wants to get on top and bring a new element to the forefront.

If you’re a fan of the found footage genre, then The Found Footage Phenomenon is the perfect genre documentary to answer any and all questions you have, while being great entertainment. The Found Footage Phenomenon is a must see for the fans, that satisfies the hunger of the unknown and sometimes unseen.

About The Author

My earliest movie memory, outside of my home theatre in my basement, was going to the local Video 99 and wanting to rent ET only to be told by the shop owner it was playing down the street in theatres. My love for cinema has been alive for as long as I can honestly remember. I would frequent the cinema minutes down from my house daily. It was a second home. Movies are an escape from the everyday world, a window into the soul, a distant friend. If I’m not watching a movie, I’m probably watching a tv show, if I’m doing neither I’m asleep.
