Spider-Man No Way Home – Review

Spiderman, No way…. Homie!

If this movie was an emoji, it would be the mind explosion emoji. Although the trailers definitely let on that we would be seeing villains from previous versions of Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s version of Spider-Man… I was still pumped to see it all go down. That wasn’t all this movie was, it was a bit of growing up tail for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, which until now, was fairly light-hearted and innocent.

As a pretty invested Spider-Man fan through my childhood up to now, I’ve always looked to the comics, cartoons, games and movies to see how Spider-Man’s story would be told. Sometimes they were gems, sometimes they felt a bit of a shortcoming of what it could be. When the Toby versions first came out, I had been excited but a bit dissatisfied with the way Spider-Man was portrayed. When then Andrew Garfield’s rendition came about, I was a bit more pleasantly optimistic. He carried the vibe of spiderman well and the movies were a bit more polished, in my opinion. Along came Tom Holland’s version, which at first I thought was a bit too light-hearted and playful… he’s slowly progressed into the Spider-Man we hope to see… one with real-world problems and growing pains.

Fast forward to Spider-Man No Way Home, our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is faced with the problems from our previous movie. He’s been outed as Peter Parker and he and his friends and family are paying the price. Calling on the help of our resident wizard, Peter seeks Doctor Strange’s help to get people to forget who he is… alas, the comedy and antics ensue as the spell goes wrong and the multiverse looks to warp in characters from other universes and movies. Villains seek out our Peter, but is he the Peter they know? No…

The movie does an excellent job at telling the story of this multiverse colliding on Peter as he learns to deal with more and more adult problems. You can feel the strife of the comic book, Peter, as he feels like the world…er… multiverse is against him. Something I felt the last two Tom Holland movies didn’t really feel like they had enough of. Sure he had the odd issue, but nothing really character-building to Spider-Man’s core. Definitely, after this movie, you could see the events that just transpired have just helped define Spider-Man going forward. After reading about three more movies with Tom Holland continuing in the role, I can’t help but be curious to see where this Spider-Man goes and watch the more ‘adult life’ Spidey take form.

The movie felt like a really good run time. It didn’t drag on and didn’t feel like it was cramming content in. Given how many villains and the zany story they had, I’m surprised they could do so effectively. Although some plot twists probably could be guessed, the movie did a good job at keeping you entertained and engaged. The actors from previous films did a tremendous job at reprising their roles. Holy moly, Willem Defoe as Green Goblin… I can never get enough of him. His costume took a slight change to allow his face to be seen throughout. Good thing for that as Defoe’s facial reactions make his character.  Electro, as seen in the trailers took a more comic book accurate change as his electricity and mask took a more traditional form.

As a Spidey fan, it was also amusing to see the various easter eggs and surprises the movie has in store for fans and newbies. It’s a well-done flick that kept me satisfied, not only as a Spidey fan but also entertained as a general movie fan. It was less about stark tech and more about storytelling. Doctor Strange was also a great pairing for the webhead and allowed for an amusing take on the story.

Overall I’d give this movie a solid 10/10. Can’t say that I had too many complaints, I was pretty happy throughout and it got me excited for the future. What comes next? Perhaps Secret Wars? Who knows, either way, count me in!
