The Suicide Squad – 4K UHD Review

"Welcome to hell — a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.

Movie Review

I missed this one in theatres. I still wasn’t ready to head back into the world when it was released. We also don’t have HBO MAX here, so I had to wait until its physical release. I’m a little disappointed I didn’t get to see James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad on the big screen. It’s a wonderfully engaging film.

It took less than a minute before I was onboard. Holy cow, what a fun ride it was. A quick team assembly, tossed into battle and right into the story. That’s how you do it. No mucking around.

The character choices were perfect. They are so obscure, and I’ve only come across a few of them during my comic book days. Of course, I love Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. She plays the character with that perfect level of craziness and zest.

Idris Elba is a welcome addition to the group of misfits along with King Shark, voiced by Sylvester Stallone, who somehow, despite being a 100% CGI character, steals every scene he’s in. Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2 is the team glue and Daniela’s performance allows to care for her. I don’t think I can skip over David Dastmalchian who brilliantly played Polka-Dot Man. Dude has some mommy issues. You’ll understand.

All-in-all, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. I’ll be putting this back on again soon, cranking it up and getting yelled at for having it too loud.

Video

Warner Bros. Home Video really hit this one out of the park. It is an absolutely beautiful 4K Ultra HDR10+ transfer. James Gunn himself said in a tweet that it was shot in 4K and finished in 4K. The blacks are rich and deep. The dark scenes are beautiful, and detail filled.

Everything from the pours on flesh are easily seen. You can see the textures on King Shark. Costume details and prop details are incredible. Even individual hairs are visible.

Audio

Alright, this, this disc right here is the demo disc. Welcome to an audio mix that will test the limits of your speakers. From the incredible score by John Murphy, to the awesome music choices Gunn always seems to go with, to the rain. It all sounds great. It comes from everywhere. If you’re rocking dual subwoofers they will also get your significant other stomping on the floor to have it turned down.

Dialog is always crystal clear, even during the heavy action sequences.

Extras

To get to the extras, you’re going to have to swap discs and put in the Blu-ray included in the case with the 4K UHD.

The good news is it’s loaded with a boatload of extras.

If you’ve already seen the movie, I suggest starting with the Commentary (4K) by James Gunn, then move onto the Gag Reel. From there, your choice.

Here is a list of everything else if you’re a fan of extra features:

  • Gotta Love the Squad
  • The Way of The Gunn
  • It’s a Suicide Mission Scene Breakdown
  • My Guns Bigger Than Yours Scene Breakdown
  • Harley’s Great Escape Scene Breakdown (4K)
  • The Fall of Jotunheim Scene Breakdown
  • Starro: It’s a Freakin’ Kaiju!
  • Bringing King Shark To Life
  • War Movie Retro Trailer
  • Horror Movie Retro Trailer
  • Buddy-Cop Retro Trailer
  • Deleted & Extended Scenes

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

This is the best 4K UHD release I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment smacked it out of the park. The release is not only loaded with some great bonus features, but also have some reference audio and video. Skip ahead to the Starro battle if you want show off your system to your friends.
