Brawn: The Impossible Formula One Story – Series Review

This four-part unscripted documentary series stars Keanu Reeves (John Wick, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure). He interviews the people behind the remarkable story of Brawn GP. Reeves talks to the players involved in the 2009 Formula One Championship Season. Recount all the ups and downs of this fairytale that made the team legends.

2008 was difficult due to a global financial crisis. Team Honda decided to exit the Formula One competition immediately. This leaves the former Team Honda crew in limbo until Ross Brawn and Nick Fry devise a plan to buy the team. Honda agreed to provide them with a sum of money to keep the team racing for the 2009 season. The cost of buying the rights from Honda was £1. After the 2009 season the team called “Brawn GP” would be all on their own.

The four-episode series is entertaining, enthralling with excitement around each corner. Watching Reeves enthusiastically interview and probe the panel of guests for their take on the events adds to the fun. He also drops an impressive amount of f-bombs throughout. It just shows how passionate he was about the material.

Go on an over four-hour journey recounting the highs and lows of team Brawn GP. See how their rear car duel-diffuser gave their cars an edge while also pissing off other teams. A court case would follow which challenged the legality of said diffuser.

Follow the triumphs and tribulations of team driver Jensen Button. See how he went from winning seven straight races to battling to stay atop the point team standings. Hear how the on-track battle with teammate Rubens Barrichello for points threatened their overall standings.

The action and drama aren’t only on the track, many tense situations almost hijacked Brawn GP. Their inaugural year sees luck always tip in their favour. When F1 teams threaten to leave the league and form FOTA. A battle with FIA president Max Mosley and F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone preceded.

Needing money Brawn and Fry are forced to make a deal with the devil. They would sign contacts with Ecclestone to stay in F1 for the 2010 season. Thus put a target on Brawn GP, until luck intervened yet again.

Recount the Button confidence struggles while racing throughout the season. Watch as an on-track incident involving Barrichello almost ended a fellow driver’s career.

Brawn: The Impossible Formula One Story is never boring. The four-part docu-series is full of stories that never fail to entertain, not only for fans of Formula One but also for fans of a good underdog story. It will leave viewers laughing, crying and cheering in their seats.
