This June a Will Ferrell uses a Saturday morning live action TV series as its inspiration for his next movie vehicle.
Despite the limitations of budget, the original TV series was able to employ the services of well respected SF writers such as Norman Spinrad, Larry Niven, Ben Bova, and Theodore Sturgeon. Star Trek luminaries such as Dorothy Fontana – a writer on the original Star Trek and Walter Koenig – Chekov, also made story contributions.
David Gerrold, another Star Trek writer who penned the, ‘The Trouble With Tribbles,’ episode also penned scripts and acted as a first season story editor.
The net result was a Saturday morning that possessed a mythology and backstory much deeper than other shows in the Saturday morning time slot.
Released on DVD in season sets, Universal is taking advantage of the upcoming Ferrell version to re-release the series in a Complete Series Collection.
